In January, 2010, Paul Arbon and John Troxel were at their weekly lunch at Cronies revisiting some of the enjoyable times they had wresting for Camarillo High School in the mid-80's. , and they thought about how great it would be to see some of their old teammates.  So they called their older coach, John Spohn, who had just organized his 40th class reunion, to see about getting together what would become the  1st Annual Camarillo High School Alumni Night. Coach Spohn was working on the other side of Los Angeles, but he was able to provide some direction to help this event take off.  Paul, who owns Party Pleasers, supplies the grill, tables, chairs and lights, while John worked on gathering names, sending out emails and lining up the donors to support the program by sponsoring weight classes.  We grilled hamburgers and hotdogs and had a great evening, raising nearly $1,800 for the program.  John Spohn lined up classmate Bob Ordas to take the pictures and Bob didn't even wrestle!

In the summer of 2010, John Spohn lined up Paul Arbon, Bruce Jochums, CG Miller, John Troxel and Bob Ordas to make the next reunion an unforgettable event.  They all met at El Tecolote, (where else?) to kick off the planning.  Bob was again going to take pictures, and he donated $300 for the food . . . thanks Bob!  Bruce volunteered to BBQ, but only if we did it right this time, so we had tri-tip and Bruce’s Beans.  Paul again supplied the tables, chairs and lights, and this time added heaters.  John Troxel helped with organizing the names and funds, and he and Paul worked on the T-Shirts.  CG assisted with the setup and tear down of everything.  John Spohn coordinated everything and touched base with many former Scorpion grapplers, making the 2nd Annual Camarillo High School Alumni Night a terrific event.

We wanted to thank all of you who came out and supported ACHS Wrestling Team on Feb 2nd. For those who couldn't make it and still donated money we appreciate your donations and efforts!

We raised almost $2,500 for Camarillo High School Wrestling Team!

WERE YOU THERE?

The night started out with a great BBQ of Tri-tip, beans, salad, garlic bread, salsa, and soft drinks.  Bob Ordas donated $300 towards the food which allowed us to upgrade from hot dogs and hamburgers.  Mary Martin called me and said she and the wrestling ladies really appreciated our fund raiser and wanted to help out.  Mary and the ladies went out and bought cakes so we could have some dessert.

During this time there were many friendships renewed just like any other reunion.  It was seeing some a couple of the old Rio Mesa wrestlers who joined our Alumni.  There were lots of hero tales and laughs throughout the night. A big surprise came for Willie Dillon the coach of Pacifica High School.  I was talking with Steve Short when Willie walked up to say hello.  He didn't notice Steve then went crazy and was very happy to see Steve again.  They both were teammates at Ventura College after graduating in 79.  They spoke for a long time and exchange phone numbers.
Willie Dillon placed 3rd in the Pac-10's for Washington State.  Willie also wrestled for Paul Arbon's dad Bob Arbon. In fact, Willie told me, "Hey ! Get Arbon in this picture!  When he was a kid he used to jump on my back."

Sergio Cortez class of 79 from Rio Mesa got to see his former teammate, Blake Wingle class of 78 and his former arch rival Steve Short who was League Champ in 79.

A big thanks to Scott Martin class of 83 for all his help on our big night. Scott is also a ACHS teacher and runs all the announcing and scoring for the wrestling matches. Scott did a great job of announcing our Alumni program.  Scott came up with the idea of having our Alumni wrestlers line up around the mat.  Then all of the Varsity wrestlers came by giving all of us a high 5's as a thanks for raising money for their program.

What a great picture of ACHS Stadium.  How many times did we all run these stairs.  Our coach, Art Pena, made us run more stairs then we could count back in the day.  No other team was in better shape then the Camarillo High Wrestling Team.

Our former Wrestling Coach, Art Pena had taken us to 7 consecutive League Titles.  We owned the Marmonte League back in the day.  Ronnie Wilson has done very well with 8 League Titles and tied this year with Oxnard for the League Championship.  Ronnie was named coach of the year 2010...Congratulations Ronnie.

ACHS WRESTLING COACHES

Gilbert Cuevas was the first wrestling coach at Camarillo High School.

Ova Farrow coached from the early 60’s through the 70’s.  Ova was an awesome coach and was great at recognizing talented skinny kids, a recruiter and turning them into outstanding wrestlers.  He was a great mentor and is no longer with us. As many of you remember Ova was from Okalahoma and wore cowboy boots on the mat. So with that said he had some unique says to his wrestlers.   Here are a couple of his sayings....You got to get your cow catchers down.  Ova also would stomp his boots and shout, "The NELSON boy, Shoot the NELSON."

Art Pena who coached Camarillo High school through many championships which is witnessed by the banners hanging in the gym. Art and his teams had won 7 consecutive League Championships. Art coached wrestling from 1965 to 1974 when he then became the Head Football Coach.

Charlie Festerling coached wrestling from 1973 – 1990.

Chuck Pearson coached wrestling from 1974 -1976.

John Spohn coached wrestling from 1976 – 1989.

John Keever who was the Wrestling Coach and Athletic Director from Moorpark College.  John coached 56 wrestlers from Camarillo High School during his coaching career.  John coached wrestling for 27 years with a record of 244 wins 111 loses and 4 ties.

Bob Cordova has been a major supporter of Camarillo High School wrestling. Bob has two sons who wrestled, Dan 1973 and Chris 1980 qualified and wrestled at the State Wrestling Tournament.  Even after his sons, Dan and Chris graduated he continued to film all the wrestlers and gave them the tapes to help them improve their wrestling. This tradition continued for years. Bob is well known by the wrestling coaches. He still attends CIF and the State Wrestling tournament to this day.
